Today, we are on episode number 121 and our topic is on “Book Review “Government Contracting- How to Register Your Business, Land Huge Contracts, and Make it Rain!: The Only Guide You Need To Work For the Government Guaranteed “ written by Brad W. King. First, let’s discuss why I decided to do a book review.
Why a Book Review?
There are a lot of books out there on Government Contracting. I wanted to give you my thoughts on some of the books available to you. Today, we are reviewing a book written by Brad W. King. He has quite a few books available through Audible. Don’t have an Audible account? Don’t worry, Federal Contracting Made Easy has you covered. Click on https://www.audible.com/fcme to sign up for a free trial. I have partnered (Ad) with Audible to provide you with a free trial of their service. If you sign up for their service after the trial ends, I will receive a small commission. Do I use Audible? Why yes, I do. I enjoy using Audible for times when I cannot read a book. For instance, when I am driving in my car or doing chores.
But don’t worry if you prefer not to listen to the book. I am including a link to my Amazon Affiliate page where you can go and purchase the book. Fair Warning, I will receive a small commission if you decide to purchase the book through this link. It is a great way to help support the channel. Here is the link.
Now, we will review what I liked about the book.
Book Review – “The Good”
What do I like about this book? Well, the book is on 31 minutes in length and is very easy to understand. The author does a good job of making the topic interesting and the time flew by. The information provided was at the 1,000-foot level. Brad tried to walk you through the process of starting a business and signing up to become a government contractor. He did a very good job overall.
The book cost less than $3.95 on Audible or you could use your free monthly credit. I would personally spend the $3.95 and save the credit for a book that costs more money. But that is totally up to you. Since we reviewed the good let’s look at the bad.
Book Review – “The Bad”
The author could have spent more time going into detail on the topics that he discussed in his book. Nevertheless, he did discuss the following topics: How to Register a business with the state, how to register the business for government contracting, Procurement Technical Assistance Centers, Federal Business Opportunities, tracking procurements and set-aside programs. You can not expect to cover any of these topics in only 30 minutes. As, I have spent hours on my blogs, podcast and YouTube channels on these very topics. Also, It is not as simple as he makes it sound.
The opportunities he is chasing are below the Simplified Acquisition Threshold otherwise known as SAT. Contracts meeting this threshold range from $10,000 to $250,000. This is a great place to start as a government contractor.
However, I do take exception to the author’s statement that this book is the only guide you will need to work for the government. I believe he stretched the statement quite a bit. Also, he did not go discuss proposal writing, teaming, joint ventures to name a few things he missed. I personally believe one book cannot cover this topic. However, I will let you decide for yourself.
Would I recommend this book? Without a doubt, I would if you have not started your business yet.
My recommendations
This book would be great for those individuals that are just starting their business. As it does walk you through the basic steps. For the cost of a cup of coffee. it does provide value. However, the author does not go into any detail on a business plan, market research, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities or threats analysis. So, if you do purchase this book just realize it is not going to answer all your questions.
Just Starting Your Business
Clearly, this book would be great for those individuals that are just starting their businesses. As it does walk you through the necessary steps. For the cost of a cup of coffee, it does provide value. However, the author does not go into any detail on a business plan, market research, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, or threats analysis. So, if you do purchase this book, realize it is not going to answer all your questions.
Already in Business
Now, if you are already in business, then about half the book is not going to apply to you. I definitely pass this book. Because the information provided in the book is available to you for free online and through my podcast and YouTube channels. For me, the book is not the only guide you will need to make money through Government contracts. However, it is up to each person to decide for themselves. Are you interested in this book? It should be noted that this book is available on Audible. Also, I have partnered with Audible. As a result, if you elect to signup with them through my relationship that I will be paid a small fee.
