Follow me as I take you through the necessary first steps to get started in bidding on federal contracts. I have 15 plus years of experience working with small businesses just like yourself. I have helped small businesses receive over $1 Billion, (that’s right, BILLIONS) in federal contracting dollars.

The first step is to determine the North American Industry Classification Code System (NAICS). So what is a NAICS code? It is a six digit code that the Government uses to classify small businesses. Each code represents a specific industry. For example, if you are in the HVAC industry your code would be 238220. Why does this matter? Well, for a number of reasons that I will not go into here but I will tell you that all federal contracts use a code for each and every solicitation.

The next step is to go to USASpending.gov.g? What is USASpending? USAspending.gov is the publicly accessible, searchable website mandated by the Federal Funding Accountability and Transparency Act of 2006 to give the American public access to information on how their tax dollars are spent. By using this database, we can determine which Federal Agencies utilize the products and/or services that we sell. Below is a little video of a search that I did.

Are there a lot of contracts for your industry? If yes, then I will show you in an upcoming article the follow-on steps. If not, then government contracting may not be for you.
